Three-Legged Frog named “Best of the Best”
Most people go fishing for the fun of the sport, and few techniques rival the fun of topwater fishing. Therefore, for the Gene Larew Three-Legged Floating Frog to be named “Best of the Best” for 2008 by Field & Stream magazine in their March issue makes perfect sense because the bait provides fun and success for bass anglers everywhere.
The magazine’s test team reported in the awards’ narrative that the lure and accessories category is always “huge in the number of entries,” which makes this top pick even more special. They further explained that lure submissions were tested over a month of fishing last fall, allowing them to determine which baits worked and which didn’t, and where they could also “let the fish be the judges.” All entries were critiqued based on performance, value, quality and innovation.
“We had more fun with this frog than we had in those long-ago days when the original Froggie used to plunk his magic twanger on TV,” the test staff reported about the Larew frog. “The lure floats well, even with a 5/0 wide-gap hook. Twitched and stuttered through weedbeds, it buzzes the surface with all three wiggly legs providing action. Bass will blast the surface in hot pursuit. It’s a fun way to fish, made all the better by this innovative lure.”
The Three-Legged Frog is able to float at rest because its body is made from Larew’s soft plastic floating formulation, the same construction used in the company’s popular line of floating lizards and tubes. The frog’s body is solid, not hollow, meaning it works in and around hard cover without collapsing and taking on water. It has a hook “compartment” in its belly, instead of a traditional hook “slit,” to help reduce friction during hooksets.
The frog’s legs are made from traditional soft plastic and loaded with salt. By design, the legs have a wider spread than typical in this kind of bait to provide greater stability and more kicking action. The spread also keeps the lure from rolling during retrieve. Of course, having a middle third appendage, which is ¾-inch longer than the outside legs, adds even more action and commotion.
The Three-Legged Frog can be buzzed, popped, twitched or left to float motionless in open water or among lily pads and grass. Even the most subtle rod movement brings all three appendages to life with plenty of strike-enticing action.
The Three-Legged Frog is available in 11 colors: Black, Watermelon Pepper, Green Pumpkin, Watermelon Pepper Neon, White Pearl Pepper, Natural Green, Chartreuse Pepper, Blackberry, Brown, Black Red and Pearl Silver/Silver. Five frogs are packaged per resealable bag. A bag retails for around $5.49. View all Three-Legged Frog colors.
